in light of an earlier suggestion that we include restaurants in our conversation, are there any good, independent restaurants/bistros/lunch spots/even sports bars with good menus west of 114th street? we're suburb dwellers this summer, and have spent many a lonely half-hour meandering west maple and west dodge, feeling out of sorts, looking for a place for dinner.
i realize most (if not all) of you are mid-town dwellers, but if anybody has any recommendations, we'd be much obliged. we've found good indian food and sushi, but have had a hard time finding other places that are NOT red robin, outback, etc.
caron, my clairvoyant powers predict that you're going to say the cracker barrel. but wait. we'd have to go to council bluffs for that...

the crack. bar. is SO underrated by some people. not me.
-brookside cafe is a favorite of mine (156th/center) because i went there when i was a little kid & it's still around now. stella's uncle owns it.

upstream ISN'T a chain, and their pot roast is STILL really good!
there isn't a cracker barrel IN omaha? wow. i love me some country fried steak.
independent sports bar: that Husker place in Village Pointe (i hate the word "point" with an extra "e"). michael went there and liked it. however, all he had there was a beer. big deal.
been to Fernando's? 114th & Dodge, next to Dairy Queen, or 144th by I-80? owned by the same folks who owned El Bees in Waterloo. i've like that place since i was little. but then again, i love cheese.
did Farucci's Bistro ever close? seems like it was on the brink of it. it was across Maple Street from Super Target over by Eagle Run, I think. not sure.
i'm convinced that West O doesn't have the culture/community to let most little independent eateries thrive. but that's just ole midtown me.
Le Voltaire (at 156th and Dodge) is a great French place with extremely reasonable prices - better than the French Cafe downtown.
Also, if you really want to be WAY out west, a new place in Elkhorn opened called Bella Vita - a small, very nice Italian place.
That's about all I can think of at the moment.
This isn't QUITE west, but close. We've enjoyed Taste in Rockbrook Village-- sort of mod and IKEA like inside, but the food is good, reasonable portions and good prices.
I've also heard the Tasting Room is good, though have not been there yet (I think it is way out west, somewhere...)
There are a number of good spots in downtown elkhorn or what was elkhorn...an italian place, Boyd & Charlies bbq - little roma european bakery is also good and they need the business.
