A salad? How?

Today I was looking through my old church's cookbook to get my mom's recipe for carrot bread. (If anyone is interested, I can post it.)

I was flipping through the pages and getting a good chuckle from some of the recipes. Here's my favorite. How this qualifies for a salad I truly do not know.

5 apples, chopped
6 Snickers bars, chopped
8 oz. cream cheese
8 oz. Cool Whip
1 jar marshmallow cream
-Combine and serve-

snicker salad! i cannot tell you how many times i was served this when i was going to school up in northwest iowa. wow. and from my iowan/minnesotan side of my family.

i think it comes from the old-school (circa 1950s) idea that anything served in a bowl, bound together by a thick white liquid was considered 'salad'. potluck standbys. kinda gross, kinda comforting.

Sounds like a relative of "Fluff" that I was served a lot growing up. Always colored red or green.

i'd never heard of this until i was served it after moving to omaha. i don't know how it qualifies as salad either, but i'm glad it does. mm, mm. :)

we have fluff a lot at our big family gatherings. jay's dad calls it "the green stuff". heh. nobody knows what's IN the fluff? it's kinda tasty in small amounts.

i'm going to write a book: casserole: food of the midwest.
